Supreme Court throws the book at three people smugglers

Greece’s Supreme Court, the Areios Pagos, has handed down a combined 92 year in prison sentences for three people smugglers.

The three human smugglers transported a total of 35 refugees and migrants to Greece, charging each person between, 2,500 and 3,000 euros.

The three were also slapped with a combined 830,000 euros in fines.

They were convicted of two smuggling missions in the first major migration wave of 2011, and are currently serving sentences in three different Greek prisons: Komotini, Grevena, and Trikala.

According to Interpol, ‘’People smuggling implies the procurement, for financial or material gain, of illegal entry into a state of which that person is neither a citizen nor a permanent resident.”
