In politics, it is not enough to grab the opportunity. One must know how to manage it.
As it seems however, the management of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s naming issue by the prime minister transformed an intractable issue into a tangled ball of yarn.
The result is that the prime minister must now seek a solution for what is nothing less than a Gordian knot.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras grabbed the opportunity offered by FYROM’s desire to enter Nato. Yet, he was once again distracted by communications tactics, and he raised the bar, without properly evaluating the reaction of his junior partner in the ruling coalition.
To mask the dissent in the ruling coalition, the prime minister provoked tensions with the opposition, instead of seeking the greatest possible consensus.
On the FYROM naming issue, the prime minister attempted once again to reap any possible political benefits, while shifting the political cost.
As a result, he is going on his own to the Davos meeting with his FYROM counterpart. He is isolated from his junior coalition partner, from the opposition, and from the demonstrators and public opinion, as opinion polls indicate.
By all appearances, the prime minister will return from the World Economic Forum at Davos, where he will hold talks with FYROM PM Zoran Zaev, all alone, in order to confront the Gordian knot that he himself created.
It remains to be seen whether, in his loneliness, he will draw the sword to cut the Gordian knot.
