«Το καλύτερο όπλο είναι να καθίσεις και να κουβεντιάσεις». Αυτή είναι μια από τις πιο περίφημες φράσεις του Νέλσον Μαντέλα.

Για να αποκαλυφθεί μπροστά στα γραφεία του ΟΗΕ στη Νέα Υόρκη, στις 18 Ιουλίου, ανήμερα της Ημέρας Νέλσον Μαντέλα, το στούντιο Snohetta δημιούργησε το «παγκάκι της ειρήνης». Επισήμως, φέρει την επωνυμία «Το καλύτερο όπλο» και στοχεύει να διαδώσει, με απτό τρόπο, τις ευεργετικές συνέπειες που μπορεί να προκύψουν από έναν ειρηνικό διάλογο.

Φόρος τιμής σε όλους τους κατόχους Νόμπελ Ειρήνης, το από αλουμίνιο εξάμετρο παγκάκι σχεδιάστηκε από το με έδρα το Όσλο στούντιο και υλοποιήθηκε σε συνεργασία με την εταιρεία Hydro, η οποία ειδικεύεται σε κατασκευές αλουμινίου και τη σκανδιναβική εταιρεία επίπλων (οικιακών και για δημόσιους χώρους) Vestre.

Το σχήμα του είναι τοξωτό και στην επιφάνειά του είναι χαραγμένη η φράση του Νέλσον Μαντέλα «το καλύτερο όπλο είναι να καθίσεις και να κουβεντιάσεις».

In collaboration with Hydro and Vestre, we have created an art installation for the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. The “peace bench”, entitled The Best Weapon, will be first unveiled at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on Nelson Mandela Day, July 18th. As a symbol of diplomacy and dialogue, the installation pays tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize laureates and their efforts to bring people together to find effective solutions for peace. Designed as a partial circle that meets the ground at its lowest point, the gentle arc of the bench pulls those sitting on it closer together. The installation’s singular design gesture embodies an invitation to conversation. Engraved on its surface is Nelson Mandela’s famous quote, “The best weapon is to sit down and talk”, from which the piece derives its name. Η εγκατάσταση ήταν παραγγελία του Nobel Peace Center στο Όσλο της Νορβηγίας. «Ελπίζουμε ότι το παγκάκι θα ενθαρρύνει τον κόσμο να καθίσει και να κουβεντιάσει – με φίλους, με αγνώστους, με αντιπάλους. Οι ειλικρινείς συζητήσεις είναι προϋποθέσεις ειρήνης» υπογράμμισε η εκτελεστική διευθύντρια του Nobel Peace Center, Λιβ Τέρες.

Τα αποκαλυπτήρια θα γίνουν στα γραφεία του ΟΗΕ στη Νέα Υόρκη και, στη συνέχεια, το «παγκάκι της ειρήνης» θα μετακομίσει, μόνιμα, στο Όσλο και θα τοποθετηθεί πλησίον του Nobel Peace Center και του Δημαρχείου της πρωτεύουσας της Νορβηγίας, όπου κάθε χρόνο απονέμεται το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης.
