'We are attempting to de-escalate tensions in the Aegean - which entail dangers of an accident – with continuing discussions on implementation of Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) agreed to over the last decades.'

Turkey’s intentions must be viewed from the vantage point of both its expansionist agenda and the desperation emanating from the state of the Turkish economy.

'We are reacting always with prudence and strategic calm to the provocations in the Aegean. The number of violations of our national airspace and territorial waters has reached a high level.'

The Greek PM described his relationship with Erdogan as one of 'respect, honesty and directness' but noted that those ties were 'challenged in very difficult moments'.
