The problem begins with the manner in which unionists themselves conceive of trade unionism, especially when they make decisions that they know are not supported by most workers.

Many do not participate in strikes either because they consider the lost wages or because they do not believe in their effectiveness as they have come to see strikes as 'just another strike day'.
