The leadership of the justice ministry had pre-announced the prosecution of politicians stemming from the Novartis scandal. Another minister told a SYRIZA party organ that “some people have to be put in jail for us to win the elections.”

The remarks of Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis to SYRIZA’s central committee about the perceived need for some people to go to jail in order for the party to win the next election are not merely a rhetorical turn of phrase.
