RULE OF LAW

The violent incidents we have seen over the last days in protests over a 16-year-old Roma boy being shot in the head in a police chase is unacceptable.

The president rightly reminded us that “the institutional counterweights [to populism] are the foundations of the rule of law, and they cannot be subjected to fleeting majorities.

Unfortunately, this government too went down the well-trodden path of its predecessors and circumvented the law due to fear of political cost.

The restoration of the prestige and credibility of institutions is one of the top priorities of the new government.
