Violence at Universities

The policing of universities is an unpleasant and complex but necessary measure in order to protect fundamental rights, such as learning, dialogue, and the dissemination of ideas.

The problem concerns not only the number of incidents, but also about the qualitative escalation in the intensity of violence, which obstructs the operation of university faculties.

The toil and passion of those who really do their work at universities co-exist with a sense of resignation because of the violent behaviour and the destruction wrought by troublemakers.

In ignoring the pleas of the academic community, the state is failing to uphold basic rights such as the unhindered transmission of knowledge and the free exchange of ideas.
